Elections!

Currently, we only have two officers at the national level--myself, and Marcus Kesler, head of the State Advisory Board. Besides the open positions on the SAB, we have openings for the Operations, Promotions, Records, Legal, and Financial officers, and at last count, four willing candidates to fill three of these positions. Jay Emerson is running for Operations, Bradley Rush is running for Records, and Travis McCrea and Nathaniel Blanchard are running for Promotions.

BitTorrent Census

We all know that the United States Census will be in full swing this year, but, another kind of census was just undertaken by a senior at Princeton.

Sauhard Sahi decided to take a random sample of the types of files available over BitTorrent networks. His results are interesting.

Congratulations to Brittany Phelps, our new Administrator!

Congratulations are in order to Brittany Phelps, in the race for our new administrator. It was a good race, and ultimately both candidates presented their arguments well, and I applaud the effort. Regardless of how you feel about either one, they had both wanted what they felt was best for the party, and that should be respectable to anyone.
Brittany Phelps - 27 Votes - 72%
Jay Emerson - 10 Votes - 27%

Microsoft, Stop Being The Leader In Corporate Greed...

In the United States if you were going to associate greed and crappy products with one company, the jokes typically going to be on Microsoft, however, with the development of Windows 7... they seem to have gotten some momentum building towards a bright new future of the company, and it shows, looking at their stocks they are doing quite well for themselves, they have been gaining points each month.

Obama's copyright problem

When Obama was campaigning in 2008, he was asked where he stood on intellectual property. His words of hope and change inspired us, like everyone else, and when he said he wanted to correct our failed intellectual property laws, we believed him. We hoped that when Obama wrote on his website:

"Barack Obama will protect the openness of the internet:
Obama and Biden strongly support the principle of network neutrality to preserve the benefits of open competition on the Internet. We had faith that we were going to see changes in America's stance on file sharing"

he truly meant a real open source community; that he meant more than changing whitehouse.gov to Drupal.

We now know that what we were told and what is being done are two very different things.

PayPal freezes Wikileaks.org's assets

Today Paypal has frozen the assets of popular whistleblowing website Wikileaks.org.
The Wikileaks project is quite possibly one of the most influential free speech organizations to spring up in the past few years, helping publish documents exposing corruption that would otherwise have never made it to the general public.

Howdy fellow Pirates.

I'm sorry that I've not posted to this site before now, in what is my final week as Administrator Pro Tempore of the Pirate Party of the United States.

On Tuesday we will have the election to decide the new Administrator of the Pirate Party.

I'm working on setting the BallotBin website program up to allow voting to take place between 8PM and 11:59PM EST on Tuesday January 26th, 2010.

Terrorism: Fear, the Illusion of Safety, and Apathy towards Civil Liberties

On December 25th, 2009 an explosive device carried by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab failed to properly detonate aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 as it was approaching Detroit. No lives were lost and Abdulmutallab was placed in custody and is being charged with placing a destructive device in proximity to and attempting to destroy a US civil aircraft.
